John began life as a transport professional in 1984 after leaving Imperial College/University College London with an MSc in Transport. He worked first as a consultant for JMP and then for six years at the London Borough of Newham before joining Urban Initiatives since 1996.

He specialises in handling the movement and access aspects of inter-disciplinary urban design, masterplanning and regeneration studies, and in undertaking complex, innovative urban transport projects.

John’s experience covers major development proposals, integrated transport studies, interchange design, mixed priority street design, and numerous training commissions. He is well known as a champion of good urban design in transport schemes and of the importance of well-designed, multi-functional streets in achieving sustainable urban development.

John is Streetscape Design Adviser to the City of Edinburgh, a CABE Enabler, a Board member of the Transport Planning Society, and writes a monthly column in Local Transport Today on ‘Transport in Urban Design’.
